2010 US Paralympics Spring Training Camp

Olympic Training Center - Chula Vista, California

The 2010 US Paralympic spring cycling camp was 9 days of training and races. Thirty campers; athletes, coaches and mechanics enjoyed training sessions, races and lectures in preparation for the 2010 racing season.

The Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California includes its own criterium course. Here Coach Rick Babbington leads athletes around on a warm up lap before the first race. These practice races included road bikes, tandems and handcycles with a mix of new athletes and Olympic medalists.

Champion cyclists Craig Vogtsberger and Greta Neimanas lead the next group of racers on their warm up lap.

During the course of the 2010 Race Camp, the athletes participated in long training sessions on the roads around the area. Most these roads have steep climbs and twisting switchbacks. The goal is to simulate many of the same conditions they will face in races around the world.

Although these athletes compete in a variety of  categories, such as tandem and hand cycles, they train together and build a team bond. Although the tandem and bicycle athletes also compete on the velodrome, this camp was strictly road based training and racing.

Some of the athletes are multi sport racers and Paralympic medalists. Allison Jones not only races on the road and velodrome, but is a decorated Winter Paralympic athlete as well.
