Meet
Steve Baskis of Smart Cycling Team

July 2009 brings a new member to the Smart
Cycling Bike Shop Team. Steve Baskis of Forest Park, Illinois
has joined our team as part of our U.S. Paralympic Cycling
program. Smart Cycling coaches have been working with paralympic
athletes in an effort to train them for cycling, both on regular
bicycles and hand cycles.
Steve is a disabled U.S. Army veteran of the
Iraq war and will be racing as a visually impaired cyclist. His
training program began with a fitness test at Smart Cycling Bike
Shop and Steve will be training daily. He will be competing with
other veterans at the States Games in Colorado later this month.
Watch the Smart Cycling Bike Shop website to
follow our team's progress throughout the racing season. We will
keep you posted on Steve's performance as the season continues.

2009 US Paralympics Spring
Training Camp
Olympic Training Center

California

The April showers never materialized at the
U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California

U. S. Olympic Coach Craig Griffin discusses the
days plans with athletes as they prepare their bikes for a
training ride.

A hand cycle awaits its athlete.

Allison and Greta get ready for an afternoon
recovery ride, while Anthony takes a break.

Wheel bumping drills are just one of the many
bike skills that keep the athletes race ready.

Here the athletes attempt to force each other out
of a circle of water bottles. Last athlete left is the winner!

The 2009 Spring Training camp included a few
trips to the San Diego Velodrome for group and individual
training sessions.
