JOIN OUR
CYCLING TEAM!
Smart Cycling
riders are on a roll!

The 2009 cycling season got off
to a very early start for the Juniors at Smart Cycling. Part
of our commitment to the sport includes teaching and helping
athletes in any discipline or category. Last year we added
paralympic hopefuls to our list.
Here Brian Arfmann (seated) and
Emil Klosowiak prepare to take hand cycles along the Chicago
lake front.
In addition to training hand
cyclists, the team welcomed visually impaired combat veteran
Steve Baskis to the ranks of the Smart Cycling Bike Shop
Team. Steve was blinded during combat in Iraq. He has
participated in several US Paralympic camps and race events.
Steve has hopes of making the 2012 US Paralympic team in
London, England.
We also added Kim Borowicz to
the team, as another potential US Paralympic athlete. Kim is
a lawyer in Chicago and plans to race road and track
starting in 2010.

The 2009 racing season warmed up a bit after a winter of indoor CompuTrainer training at
the Smart Cycling Bike Shop. Our Junior team headed out
into the real world for a season of racing. Here Bryan Froehlicher checks out the competition as they get ready for
the 2009 Vernon Hills Grand Prix criterium.

While race official Dave talks to the younger athletes, Sam
Gabuzzi and Brian Arfmann (left) get ready for the start of
their 2009 Vernon Hills Grand Prix criterium. Sam, Brian and
teammate Emil Klosowiak have been working hard all spring.

The end of May means it is time for velodrome racing. Smart
Cycling coach Steve Thordarson helped the local juniors get
ready for track racing with an all day track clinic at the
Ed Rudolph velodrome in Northbrook, Illinois. Brian Arfmann
and teammate Meghan Lapeta lead the big field of juniors around the track
for a warm-up.

Doug McLaren (in the Pepsi jersey) takes some time to give
championship advice to a few of the older Smart Cycling
Juniors.
The day was filled with lessons on racing tactics, sprinting
technique, pre-race warming and post race cooling advice,
all presented by a dedicated group of highly experienced
track racers, including Kevin Perez, Doug McLaren, Mike
Ferren and Steve Thordarson.
Practice
makes
perfect!

Teammates Sam Gabuzzi and Brian Arfmann trained and
practiced their race skills all Spring and Summer. One of
their pay offs was winning the top two final placings in the
Soldier's Field Criterium Series.

A popular new event in the last few years is the Glencoe
Criterium in downtown Glencoe, Illinois. Here Teammates
Brian Froehlicher and Matt Meyer wait at the start line for
the beginning of their race. As you can see in this picture,
the Junior field has been growing this year.

For most racing cyclists in the Chicagoland area, the
Downers Grove Criterium is one of the most important races
of the year. The village closes its streets for two days of
racing and fun. Here Brian Froehlicher, Brian Arfmann and
Sam Gabuzzi get warmed up in the shade before the start of
their event. The fourth bike in the picture belongs to
teammate Emil Klosowiak, who was getting dressed.
Brian Arfmann (pictured below) keeps the field together as
the cyclists go through turn one at the Downers Grove
Criterium.

Junior Racers Wanted!
Smart Cycling Bike Shop sponsors a Junior Development team
for girls and boys between 10 and 18 years of age. If your
child is interested in the sport of cycling, come join in
the fun. Not every kid wants to race, so we have rides and
training for everyone regardless of their goals. Please call
our shop or stop by and talk to us.

It is never too early to get ready for next year. Julian
Newman, the newest arrival to Smart Cycling Bike Shop Team,
trains on the CompuTrainer to start getting ready for his
2010 season.
If you have a question about the ride, please contact Steve
or Peggy.
